How to stop scrolling this Summer

One of the things people ask me about the most is my strict boundaries when it comes to holidays.

Every time I switch off all social media to give my brain a rest from all the noise and to be present for my family – who hate it when I’m on my phone.

It’s now become part of the fabric of the way I run Calm In A Box and I’m always grateful for the break when it comes.

If you think you’re looking at your phone too much and you’re thinking about trying a digital detox this Summer, here’s some ideas to get you going.

Start with Your Why

Before you make any changes this summer, take a moment to ask yourself: Why does this matter to me? Who or what are you doing it for? When your motivation is personal and meaningful, it becomes like rocket fuel. It’s what keeps you going when old habits creep back in. A clear “why” makes all the difference.

Plan for the Scroll Cravings

Once you’ve figured out why you really want to do this, think ahead: what will you do when you feel that familiar urge to scroll? There will be times—maybe out of boredom or habit—when reaching for your phone feels automatic. Try to replace that moment with something more aligned with your goals. For example, I start my summer mornings with a sea swim or a walk to the shop—it’s a lot more appealing than diving into social media first thing.

Treat It Like an Experiment

Going cold turkey might sound tempting, but it often leads to frustration. These platforms are designed to pull you back in—it’s not just about willpower. So be kind to yourself. See your detox as a personal experiment. What works for you? What doesn’t? You’re not aiming for perfection—you’re learning how to create a better balance.

You’re Not Missing Anything

Really—you’re not. Whatever you think you’re missing online, you’re gaining tenfold in presence, clarity, and connection in the real world. I promise you.

This summer, give yourself permission to unplug—even just a little. You might be surprised by how much more yourself you feel when you do.
