How CALM can help me reach my potential?

Following another successful CALMfest, it’s been marvellous to see hundreds of you signing up for your free CALM Scorecard to help you get ahead with your mental fitness, develop your workplace change agility and figure out what slowing down to go faster looks like for you.

An emerging key theme from the CALM Scorecards completed so far has been around people wanting to explore how they can reach their potential at work.

So we thought we’d pop some CALM ideas on the blog….

It doesn’t have to be about getting to the top

Reaching your potential doesn’t always have to be about moving up the hierarchy step by step. In fact it doesn’t have to be about hierarchy at all. Often people fall into the trap of equating outwards success with realising potential only to find that they are not fulfilled and still left looking for what’s really meaningful to them at work. Step back and reflect on what you value when it comes to extrinsic success factors – money, status, job titles – but don’t forget to explore your intrinsic values at the same time. These are all about meaning, purpose and relationships and these reflections might well mean your potential lies in a somewhat different direction.

Get to know yourself well – and then go deeper

We say to all our clients when it comes to developing that all important being energy, awareness is always the first step. But unlike the doing side of the CALM wheel, developing self awareness is not a tick box exercise. People are also like onions and it takes time and effort to peel back the layers. Some would say this is our life’s most important work! Carve out time regularly (it doesn’t have to be for long – think 1% CALMer) to get to know yourself through different angles. Our CALM Healthcheck is a great way to do this and our 1% CALMer club members get one of these sessions every year as part of their plan.

Are you playing a game?

Realising your true potential invariably means dropping the facade and removing the safety mask. Again this can take time and requires a bit of courage but it’s a key step in the development process if you want to realise your full potential. Often what gets uncovered is a number of games we play, with others as well as ourselves. Two of the most common are playing to win and playing it safe. Sometimes it’s necessary (and fun!) to step into this space but high performers will do this as a conscious choice rather than as their default mode. Developing your mental fitness will give you access to more options which may prove more helpful in securing better outcomes.

Start with the end in mind

Our hopes and aspirations about fulfilling our potential often look quite different when we consider what’s important in the here and now versus looking backwards from our desired destination. Starting with the end in mind can be an effective way of making sure we both prioritise what’s really important in the noise and busyness of the day to day as well as checking that we are consistently taking small steps towards where we really want to get to.
