How to have a healthy swing

Reading Everything You Need You Have by Gerad Kite recently, I loved his concept of thinking about emotional balance connected to a swinging pendulum.

The pendulum represents you and the swinging from one side to another, the maelstrom of thoughts, feelings and emotions in our mind and body that fluctuate at any given time.

Highs and Lows

The teaching of the pendulum is simple and powerful. We have a choice. We can live at the base of the weight swinging backwards and forwards, controlled by our minds creating thoughts and emotions either positive or negative. It is easy to become addicted to swinging one way for a ‘high’ but then the opposite way for a ‘low’. Or we can choose to try and climb up the central stem of the pendulum and avoid these emotional swings and imbalance to try and reach a better and more helpful place of calm and awareness.

This awareness can give you a profound and alternative perspective of what is happening in your mind and body as a response to external stimuli whether that be positive or negative. This alternative perspective can help bring much more peace and calm into your life to support your wellbeing and capability to deal with life’s ups and downs.

Reflect on where you might be sitting on your pendulum right now and consider how that changes day to day for the next week.
